Windhoek has experienced significant rural-urban migration in recent years. Consequently, the City of Windhoek is facing an unprecedented shortage of water and electricity and have allocated a budget of N$ 1 million to address this problem. As an energy conversion engineer, you are entrusted to design the ideal technology to generate electricity and produce water for the residents. In your own words, answer the following questions: 1.1 Identify the suitable fuel cell technology for City of Windhoek (CoW) (1 mark) Alkaline fuel cell (AFCs) - previously used in the U.S. space program to generate electrical energy and produce water onboard spacecraft. 1.2 Justify the superiority of such a fuel cell in comparison to combustion-based technologies (2 marks) AFC is an electrochemical device that produces electricity without combustion by combining hydrogen and oxygen to produce water and heat. 1.3 Explain how your choice would benefit CoW from an environmental standpoint (1 mark) 1.4 Explain how you plan to obtain the fuel for powering your device (2 marks) 1.5 Explain how your technology will meet the electricity and water demands? (4 marks) The electrons from the anode cannot pass through the membrane to the cathode; they must travel around it via an external electrical circuit. This movement of electrons generates an electrical current. At the cathode, oxygen combines with electrons and, in some cases, with species such as protons, resulting in water or hydroxide ions, respectively 2H2+02 >2H20 + heat 1.6 Explain why using catalysts in your fuel cell would be impractical? (2marks) 1.7 What is the significance of your project in terms of sustainable development goals? (3 marks) - SDG #6 - Clean water and sanitation - SDG #7- Affordable and Clean Energy - SDG #13 - Climate Action 1.8 Name and define two energy-conversion processes that could potentially further exploit the byproducts of fuel cells into spin-offs (5 marks) - Electrolyzer - to convert the resultant water to hydrogen and oxygen - Thermoelectric transducer - to convert the resultant heat to electrical energy
