Question 1 48 000 kg/hr of fluid is to be cooled from 110°C to 97°C by a tube side fluid which is heated from 75°C to 89°C in a 1 shell pass 6 tube pass heat exchanger. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger is 673 W/m² K and the specific heat of the shell side fluid is 2300 J/kg-K. 1.1. Will the heat exchanger be able to cool the hot fluid to the required temperature if it has an area of 28m² (7) 1.2. Would the above answer change if the heat exchanger were a purely counter current heat exchanger, and if so why? (6) 1.3. What happens to the heat transfer coefficients as the fluid velocities through the heat exchanger increase? (2) [15]
