A load of P = 1000 kN is applied centrally applied to the square footing. The material properties of the clay are an undrained elastic modulus of E = 10,000 kPa, an undrained shear strength of C₂ = 120 kPa and a unit weight of y = 19 kN/m³. Cu The footing must satisfy a strength and serviceability criterion. For the strength criterion, the factor of safety for short-term bearing capacity failure must be greater than or equal to 3. The ultimate bearing capacity of the footing should be obtained from Hansen's equation. The serviceability criterion requires that the initial set- tlement of the footing be less than or equal to 20 mm. Determine the size of the footing, B, that satisfies the strength and serviceability criterion. Show full working out in the answer booklet and justify any assumptions that you made in designing the shallow footing.
