Shown below are a reservoir and a river, each located at different elevations. Running between the reservoir and the river, and connecting them hydraulically, is a confined soil seam or layer that includes sand and silt. The seam is approximately 2 meters thick over its entire length. The sand in the seam has a hydraulic conductivity (Ksand) equal to 3x10-5 centimeters per second. The silt has a hydraulic conductivity (Ksit) equal to 8x10 centimeters per second. As shown, the total length of the seam is approximately 135 meters. The lengths of the sand and silt segments of the seam are 57 meters and 78 meters, respectively. Assume the cross-section shown is representative of the field conditions over a width of 2 meters, into the page, and answer the following questions. What are h₂, hp, and h, at Points A through E? • What amount of seepage (i.e. flow) occurs from the reservoir to the river over a 20-day period? Reservoir Relatively Impervious Soil El. 264 m 2.8 m B SAND SILT C₁ El. 240 m A Drawing is not to scale. 57 m 135 m El. 253.9 m 78 m River D 4.3 m
