Given: a soil sample with properties shown below
D=5 in, H=10 in, Wt=6320 g, w=19.7%, Gs=2.65
Find:
1) total volume, Vt, volume of solids, Vs, volume of voids, Vv,
volume of water, Vw, volume of air, Va, in the sample in ft3 (15
pts.)
2) degree of saturation, S, volumetric water content, θw, and void
ratio, e (5 pts.)
3) total unit weight, γt, dry unit weight, γd, and saturated unit
weight, γsat in pcf (5 pts.)
Given: a triaxial sample with initial conditions as given in
Part a) above, and assuming isothermal conditions exist
Find: the pore air pressure for the following two cases.
7) The sample is subjected to an increase in confining stress and
experiences a total volumetric strain of 2%. What will be the pore
air pressure if the volumetric compression occurs under DRAINED
conditions (e.g. drainage lines open)? Report your answer in both
absolute pressure (psia) and gage pressure (psig).
