Question 2 A pile group of five identical hollow steel piles is designed to support a tower. The arrangement is as shown. RA= 0.25, D=0.7m, L = 8m. The soil consists of two layers, first being a sand layer with following results: Depth 0.5 r.c. 0.8 1.2 1.6 2.0 column (m) N-Value 8 10 11 12 15 L 40N for ≤10 b Fs = 2Nave D f 400N or=—=>10 The second layer is a clay with Cu = 40 + 2.5z (state the bearing method) i) Find the bearing capacity of a single pile ii) iii) Given pile group efficiency = 85% find force allowed on pile group If the N = 20 was to be founded at a depth of 9m how would this change the bearing iv) Find settlement of a single pile given load on pile group = 1MN and the depth to rock = 20m v) Find the settlement of the entire pile group vi) What is negative skin friction, give two examples of where it is relevant and the reason engineers should be aware of it D load transferred directly by compression to piles over shaded area
