Silicon has a face-centred cubic structure with a two-atom motif
at (0, 0, 0) and (0.25, 0.25, 0.25). The structure can also be
described by the space group Fd-3m and an asymmetric unit of one Si
atom at (0, 0, 0).
(a) What is the crystal system of Si?
(b) What is its Bravais lattice?
(c) Explain what is meant by “space group” and Fd-3m.
(d) Draw the crystal structure and display it in projection
along the [001] direction.
(e) What is the bonding type in Si, and how is it
reflected in the crystal structure?
