A cutting tool with a rake angle of 10°is removing 0.5mm of
material per cut. In the process, chipsare being produced with a
final thickness of 1.125mm. If this machining operation can be
approximated using orthogonal cutting, calculate:(8 marks)
a.the shear plane angle and the shear strain.
b.the shear strength of the material if the cutting forces were
measured to be Fc=1559N,Ft=1271N and the width of the cutting
operation was 3.0mm.
c.the friction angle coefficient.
d.the cutting power required if the cutting speed is
100m/min.
e.the increase in temperature that the material will
experienceif the volumetric specificheat for the work material =
3.0 (10-3) J/mm3and the thermal diffusivity = 50 mm2/s
