3.) Next, for each unit cell a.) show the end result of a Cz' proper rotation symmetry operation, and b.) show the end result of an Sa' improper rotation symmetry operation. (Recall that it is conventional to perform rotations in a clockwise direction, which is what your authors show. (Because I am such a non-conformist, I prefer to apply rotations in an anti- clockwise direction.) But it really does not matter whether one prefers the clockwise or the anti-clockwise rotation direction. Pick one, and use the same rotation direction for both symmetry operations performe on both unit cells. Aside – you will find it necessary to label (number them, or “letter” them, or color-code) the atoms that “move” during the application of the symmetry operations. Atoms that do not move into a new location need not be distinguished.) 4.) Finally, IF IT EXISTS, show the result or an inversion centre, i, for each unit cell. 5.) Do you think that these two unit cells belong to the same point group? Please explain.
