GNED 101: Introduction to Arts and Sciences Assignment 1 (10%)
Due Date: 5 June 2022
Please do not include any direct quotes or paraphrased material from any source beyond the readings. This is meant to be an exercise in conceptual analysis, which requires that you apply concepts contained in the Ethics of Belief readings alone. You will lose marks for basing your analysis on sources beyond the course readings, and of course any content in your assignment that is not your own and that is not properly cited will, as an instance of plagiarism, result in a mark of 0/10.
I encourage you to not to use any direct quotes from the reading material. This assignment is short, and so you should be as economical as possible when summarizing the reading material. Furthermore, you do not need to cite paraphrased material from the readings, as long as you introduce the paraphrased material with phrases like “According to Clifford, …,” “Clifford states that …,” “In Clifford’s view …,” etc.
Place your answers in the editor below.
Scenario One
A builder has been hired to construct a house. The builder has decided to save some money by using relatively cheap materials to construct the house. Experts in the industry have identified the materials as of such poor quality that people living in houses built with them are at far greater risk of being harmed than people living in houses built with higher quality materials. The builder knows this, but believes that the house that they build will not present any danger to its buyer, because (1) none of the many other houses the builder has built with the same materials over the past five years has resulted in harm to their occupants, and (2) the occupants of those other houses are quite happy to be living in houses that they bought at relatively low costs. Unfortunately, soon after the buyer moved into the house, the house collapsed on them, causing them serious injuries.
Scenario Two
The scenario is identical to Scenario One, except that the house never collapsed on the buyer, because the buyer sold the house soon after they bought it, and it collapsed before the new buyer moved in. Hence, no one happened to be injured.
