Steps: 1. Please choose ONE of the following attached readings a. Feng Guifen on Self-Strengthening . Feng Guifen (Feng Kuei-fen) on "The Manufacture of Foreign Weapons" (c. 1860) In this text, Feng, a leading self-strengthening advocate makes his argument for the importance of adopting Western military technology. The first 3 paragraphs are an introduction to the text, and the rest is the text itself. b. The Land System of the Taipings • The Land System of the Heavenly Kingdom" (1853). This document reflects the social, religious, and agricultural policies of the Taiping rebels 2. After reading the text, write a 150-200 word summary of it. Your answer should be formatted as a 1-2 paragraph response, and should integrate the answers to these questions. You should not answer each question separately. • In writing your summary of the text, try to consider the following questions: • Who? who wrote the text? How do they relate to the information and ideas being discussed? What was their role in society at the time? • When? When was it written? What else was going on at the time? Or, what kind of social situation were they living in? What? What is the text about? In a sentence, what would you say the main argument of the text is?
