QUESTION 2 (PO2, CO3, C5) Ammonium nitrate (NH.NO;) is used commonly in explosives, fertilisers, in pyro-techniques to produce herbicides, and insecticides; and in the manufacture of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). In a production of crystalline ammonium nitrate, fresh ammonium nitrate aqueous solution containing 19 wt% NH.NO, enters a mixer, where the fresh stream is combined with recycled NH.NO, solution containing 37.5 wt% NH.NO,. The exit stream is then evaporated using an evaporator, producing 50 wt% NH.NO, solution. This concentrated solution is then crystallised in a crystalliser. The crystalliser has an efficiency in the range CASOLU CHEMICAL ENC order to produce final NH.NO, crystals of purity between 90-95 wt%. TheChcENGINEERING solution is then recycled into the mixer. With the aid of a completely labelled process diagram and performing calculations to find unknown flow rates and their respective compositions, compare and evaluate the assumed values of crystalliser's efficiency to achieve desired NH.NO, crystals purity.
