The segment AB is a solid steel cylindrical shaft of 4-in diameter. Segment BC is a thin-walled brass tube with a cross-section shown in the figure. The segments are attached to a rigid plate at B, where-a torque T is applied. If the allowable shear stresses for the steel and brass are 10 ksi and 7 ksi, respectively, determine the largest torque T that can be applied to the shaft. Use 11 x 103 ksi and 5.4 x 103 ksi for the shear modulus of elasticity of steel and brass, respectively. Use F. S. of 1.2. 4 ft 4 ft + T A B 0.4 in. 6 in. 1.5 in.- 0.4 in. 0.2 in. C 0.2 in. -0.2 in. -5 in.- -1.5 in. -0.2 in.
