question relates to a "spark plug", a component of an internal combustion car engine. A spark plug electrically ignites fuel within a car. It can be modelled as two metal plates, separated by a distance d = 3mm. (a) When a potential difference of 10 kV is applied to the metal plates, dielectric breakdown occurs. Explain, with the aid of a diagram, what dielectric breakdown is and calculate the dielectric strength of the material between the plates. (5 marks) (b) The battery within the car has a potential difference of 12 V. As the spark plug requires a potential difference of 10 kV to operate, explain how a transformer could be used to achieve this. (2 marks) (c) A solenoid is part of the transformer. The solenoid has circular cross-section and has a radius r = 10 mm, a length L = 0.5m, and has 100 turns. Using Ampere's law, with the aid of a diagram and stating any necessary assumptions, show that the magnetic field can be approximated as B = uonl and estimate this magnetic field strength for a current of 1 A.
