GENERAL PHYSICS 1 HOMEWORK SET FOR CHAPTERS 12 1. A ball is hanging by a massless thread which is fixed to the wall. And the 10N ball touches the frictionless wall. The ball is under equilibrium. The dimensions are r = 5.0 cm, L= 15 cm. a. Draw the FBD for the ball. b. What is the amount of tension on the thread? c. What is the force on the ball from the wall? d. Calculate the torque with respect to point 0 for the forces on the ball. Is it zero as you would expect? 2. (40 pts) A block of weight 200 N is resting on a uniform beam of length L = 3.00 m and 0 = 30°. The beam weighing 400 N is held in place by a wire as shown. When x = 0.750 m, answer the following: a. Draw the forces acting on the beam. (The force from the hinge A will have both horizontal and vertical components in general) b. Find the tension on the wire. (Hint: calculate torque with respect to point A using forces on the beam) c. Find the force acting on the beam from the hinge A. d. Calculate the torque with respect to point B using the forces on the beam.
