When blood calcium falls to a certain point, the parathyroid glands sense this change and release parathyroid hormone (PTH) in response. The PTH travels through the blood until it encounters receptors on target cells in bone tissue and the kidneys. PTH promotes bone resorption, calcium reabsorption by the kidneys, and production of calcitriol by the kidneys. Calcitriol, in turn, promotes calcium absorption along the digestive tract. As blood calcium levels rise, the parathyroid glands reduce secretion of parathyroid hormone. ► Convert this information to a diagram of an endocrine reflex.
