The general formula is Work (J) = force (N) x distance (m) When both the force and the the angle between the force and the direction of movement vary as a function of position, the resulting work (W()) can be calculated from Xn W = F(x)cos[0(x)]dx Xo where F(x) is the force varying as a function of position (N), 8(x) is the position- dependent angle between the force and the direction of movement, xo and xn are the initial and final positions (m), respectively.
