Those of us that live in or near Los Angeles live dangerously
close to a plate boundary, more commonly known as the San Andreas
Fault. The San Andreas Fault is an active plate boundary
separating the North American plate and the Pacific Plate. In this
context the word "active" means that the plates separated by this
plate boundary are moving, and therefore, capable of causing
geologic events that we would consider geologic hazards, such as
earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic activity depending on the type
of plate boundary involved. Because LA is so close to this
infamous plate boundary, those of us living in or near LA are at
risk of injury, economic loss, and even death as a result of
geologic activity, including but not limited to earthquakes and
landslides. Fun Fact: we live on the Pacific Plate, which
means we are moving in a different direction than the rest of the
country that happens to be mostly situated on the North American
Plate.
