Q2. . (a) One way that scientists study muscles is to put them into a state of rigor by removing ATP. In this condition, actin and myosin are strongly linked but unable to move. On the basis of muscle contraction, predict what would happen to these muscles in a state of rigor: (i) when you added ATP without calcium ions. (3 marks) (ii) when you added ATP with a substantial concentration of calcium ions. (3 marks) (b) The result of an electric impulse reaching the muscle fibres is a maximal contraction of those fibres. Explain this statement and describe how the force exerted by the muscle can vary significantly. (2, 9 marks) (C) Explain the phenomena why all the muscle fibres attached to a motor neurone will not necessarily contract at the same time. (4 marks) d) When curare, a South American Indian arrow poison, is placed on a nerve- muscle preparation, the muscle does not contract when the nerve is stimulated, even though neurotransmitter is still being released from the nerve. Interpret in your light of understanding any TWO possible explanations for the action of (4 marks) curare.
