Using a plastic pipet one drop of a ~1 mL sample of an anion unknown is placed on red litmus paper. The part of the paper where the drop of solution was added turned blue. Several drops of 6M HNO3 acid was added with shaking. No bubbles appeared. To this acidified solution was added ~6-10 drop of 0.1 M BaCl₂ reagent. The mixture was shaken, centrifuged, and supernatant liquid decanted and discarded. A white precipitate remained in the test tube. To a fresh ~1 mL sample of the unknown solution in a test tube was added one piece of mossy zinc and ~1 mL 6 M HCl. A clean transfer tube with a rubber stopper was inserted into the test tube and the other end of the transfer tube submerged into a small 15 x 100 mm test tube half filled with lime water. Bubbles were observed rising from the sample test tube and bubbling into the lime water. The apparatus was set aside and marked as T3. Another ~1 mL sample of the unknown solution was acidified with a few drops of 6 M HNO3 until acidic to Litmus followed by the addition of ~10 drops of 0.1 M AgNO3 but no precipitate was observed. Additional drops of 0.1 M AgNO3 was added and the mixture shaken. The solution remained clear. Test solution T3 was examined but no cloudiness or precipitation was observed after a 15-20 minute time period. Testing of the unknown solution for other anions was continued. To a fresh ~1 mL sample of the unknown solution ~1 mL of 6 M HNO3 was added, the mixture shaken followed by the addition of another 1 mL portion of 0.5 M (NH4)2MoO4 reagent and thoroughly mixed. The test tube was placed in a water bath under the fume hood at 40-50°C for a few minutes. The test tube marked T5 was set aside for about 10 minutes. To another fresh ~1 mL sample of the unknown solution ~5 drops of 3 M H₂SO4 was added followed by ~1 mL of freshly prepared Fe2+ solution. The mixture was vigorously shaken and under the fume hood with a plastic pipet about 1 mL of 18 M H₂SO4 was carefully added. The resulting solution after approximately one minute showed the presence of a brown ring at the H₂SO4-water interface. To complete the analysis test tube T5 was examined and was found to contain a canary yellow precipitate. From the description and information provided in this analyses indicate which anions are present in your unknown.
