QUESTION 3 (12 MARKS) A mixture of hydrocarbon compounds (A, B and C) was separated using gas chromatography technique. The separation was achieved using a polydimethylsiloxane column at an initial temperature of 95 °C then increase to 230 °C at 15 °C/min and gas nitrogen at 30 cm/s. A split injection ratio of 20:1 was used. The resolution values for A, B and C peaks are 1.2 and 2.0. The film thickness is 0.25 um. a. Predict the efficiency of separation if an isothermal temperature of 150 °C will be used. (4 marks) b. Discuss briefly what would happen to the separation's efficiency if the following parameters were employed. i. The film thickness is changed to 0.60 um (2 marks) ii. The split injection ratio is changed to 75:1. (2 marks) C. Four organic compounds of different polarities including propene, butanal, 2-propanol and 2-octanol were separated using gas chromatography. Polar column (polyethylene glycol, PEG) was used for the separation. With suitable explanations, the order elution of these compounds. (4 marks)
