7. Why was the starch hydrolysis done using H2S04 and not NaOH? (Use experiment #3) #3 Acid and Base Hydrolysis. Test tubes (left basic NaOH), (right acid H2SO4) that contained sucrose (a disaccharide) were heated to hydrolyze the sucrose into monosaccharides. The benedicts test was repeated to determine if hydrolysis occurred as shown by a positive Benedicts test detecting the oxidation of the newly formed monosaccharides.
