2. The conversion of methanol (MeOH) to acetic acid (MeCO2H) is
carried out in a huge industrial scale: currently more than 3.5 Mt
of MeCO2H is produced a year, worldwide, and 60% of the world’s
acetyls are manufactured using the Monsanto process. Before 1970,
the BASF process that used cobalt catalyst was used commercially.
Bases on the above information, answer the following questions.
(a) What are the reagents used in the Monsanto Process?
(4 points) (b) What is the catalyst used in the Monsanto
Process?
(c) Write the catalytic cycle of the Monsanto acetic acid
process.
(d) What are the advantages of Monsanto over the BASF
process?
