Question 2 The small reinforced concrete bridge shown in Figure-2 spans 10.0 m between simple supports, and consists of two beams B1 and B2 supporting slabs S1 and S2 and cross beams B3, B4 and B5. Each slab is therefore supported on four sides with the edges supported by B4 being continuous. Design and provide layout sketches for the steel needed in S1 assuming the steel in the horizontal direction in plan is placed first and last. Take the slab to be 150 mm thick and assume slab loading to be self-weight of 3.6 kN/m² plus 0.5 kN/m2 applied D.L. and 4.0 kN/m2 L.L Use N12 bars only with a cover of 25 mm. Assume that the supporting beams all have a web width of 450 mm. Also assume that a moderate degree of control over cracking is required. f'c = 40 MPa, y = 0.766, Ec = 32800 MPa, fsy = 500 MPa, Es = 200000 MPa 10m Span ELEVATION Sm BEAM 2 sm 11 ! 11 S1 S2 BEAM 3 BEAM 4 BEAMS 5m BEAM1 PLAN Figure - 2
