A 15 cm outer diameter steam pipe is covered with a layer of 5 cm thick high temperature insulation and a layer of 4 cm thick low temperature insulation. The thermal conductivity of the high temperature insulating material and the low temperature insulating material are ki = 0.85 W/m-°C and k2 = 0.72 W/m-°C, respectively. The steam is at 500 °C and the ambient air is at 40 °C. Calculate the total heat loss from 100 m length of the pipe. Hint: List the appropriate assumptions on the thermal resistance of steam, the air sides, and the pipe metal wall.
