In the figure (right), a person is climbing a staircase and
supporting their bodyweight on their flexed leg. The system
can be treated as in equilibrium. The distance a from the
centre of mass to the joint centre is 10 cm, the distance from the
joint centre to the patellar tendon connected to the quadriceps is
2cm. If the body weight is 75kg, what is the force required by the
quadriceps? Use the exercise to explain what mechanical advantage
the patella offers when the knee is flexed.
