Plastic is a man-make polymer with crude oil as the main raw material. Their discovery and usage had enabled society to make huge technological advances. Plastic is also a cheaper material compared to metal, and their excellent moldability enable them to be formed into shapes with intricate features. From toys, consumer products, medical, chemical and pharmaceutical and advance engineering, plastic has found their ways in virtually all areas of applications and in every area of our life. It is unimaginable how modern days will look without plastic. Injection molding is one of the methods to manufacture high quality plastic at an affordable price and is used across a variety of industries. It is important for the product designer to understand the molding process, its capabilities, and limitations. Plastic part design for molding is critical to the economic success of a product for its appearance, strength, and cost. A proper designed part can achieve the desired outcome and also prevent quality issues during production and in service. In this assignment, a casing for a power supply unit is to be molded from thermoplastic. (Figure 1). Figure 1 Plastic cover (left) and Base (right). Objectives 1) With the basic design rules for injection molding in mind, critique the current design and suggest how it can be improved? (i.e.: follow design guidelines for boss design, thickness, draft etc. Marks will be awarded according to numbers of relevant recommendations)
