Part 1: Explain the hidden and exposed terminal problems in the context of wireless networking. What is the main consequence of each of these in terms of channel congestion (collisions) and utilisation? Handshaking is a commonly used approach to reduce the impact of collisions when the take place, how is this achieved and in which conditions is it most effective? (20 marks) Part 2: In an attempt to reduce collisions and interference, the frequency space available to a wireless network may be divided into channels. By making reference to 802.11b networks, explain how the use of channels helps network administrators to manage their network access points for reduced interference. Discuss the difference between non-overlapping and partially overlapping channels and explain why in certain circumstances (such as residential streets) it is often preferable for households to make use of one of the partially overlapping channels for their home network, rather than one of the channels guaranteed not to overlap.
