a. (2 points) Consider the carbon atom with an electronic configuration of [He]2s22p?. The [He]2s electrons are considered “core” electrons since they do not contribute to either orbital or spin angular momentum. The core electrons can therefore be ignored in the following treatment. The remaining 2p- electrons are considered "valence" electrons. The number of possible arrangements of electrons (microstates) is N = m!/n! (m, n)!, where n is the number of valence electrons, and m is the number of orbitals available to the valence electrons. Calculate the number of microstates. b. Calculate the total possible electron spin angular momentum S and the total (possible) orbital angular momentum L for the atom. c. Organize the microstates into a table. Be orderly, and omit any Pauli-forbidden microstates. Label the states by the components of their angular momenta along the z-axis.
