Alkalosis can be caused by hyperventilation, rapid deep breathing often caused by panic attacks or other emotional stresses. Using your knowledge of buffers and equilibrium, explain why hyperventilation causes an increase in blood pH. 7. In lab, we will "cure" your blood sample's alkalosis by adding more CO2 in the form on dry ice (solid carbon dioxide). Explain why the addition of dry ice will cause a decrease in pH. 8. Predict how your body could combat alkalosis, and justify why that would work.
