Borough of Manhattan Community College The City University of New York SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Laboratory Experiment SPECTRA Obiective: To use a spectroscope to study the characteristics of different kinds of spectra as astronomers do in order to find out which elements are present in stars Apparatus Spectroscope, hydrogen yas tube, helium gas tube, neon gus tube, mercury gas tube, krypton gas tube, and fluorescent lamp Theory The spectroscopes in this lab use a diffraction grating to create a spectrum. The diffraction grating breaks up light into its component colors by the process called diffraction. Diffraction is the result of the interference properties of light. This interference occurs because of light's wave nature and it causes colors to propagate in different directions when exiting the grating high density diffraction hot matter grating Continuous spectrum wwwwww A. hot gas Emission spectrum wwwwww cold gas Absorption spectrum www Image by OpenStax is excerpted from Astronomy and licensed under CC BY 4.0 Download the school for free https://openstax or details hooks astronomy There are three basic types of spectra that are commonly produced by sources of light. The light from a solid object, such as the hot wire filament inside an incandescent light bulb, produces light at all visible wavelengths, resulting in a continuous spectrum (see above figure). A hot gas, on the other hand, emits light only at specific discrete 35
wavelengths, resulting in bright emission lines (called an emission spectrum). Finally, if the light from a light source producing a continuous spectrum passes through a cold gas light at specific wavelengths is absorbed out, producing dark absorption lines (called an absorption spectrum). We can learn which types of atoms are in a gas cloud from the pattem of absorption or emission lines they produce. In this lab we will observe both continuous and emission spectra, but not absorption spectra Procedure: Part (A) Incandescent Bulb (Ordinary Light Bulb) 1. Using the spectroscope, observe the spectrum of the incandescent light bulb, 2. Obtain the answers to the questions in the Report Section for Part (A) using your observations Part (B) Emission Line Spectra 1. Using the spectroscope, observe the spectrum for each of the following elements: Hydrogen, Helium, Neon, Mercury, and Krypton 2. These are emission line spectra. Record on the Date Page chart where you observe cach emission line for each of the clements 3. Answer the questions in the Report Section for Part (B). Part (C) Fluorescent Bulb 1. Observe the spectrum of the fluorescent lamp and Record on the Data Page, 2. Obtain the answers to all the questions in the Report Section for Part (C). Report Section: Part (A) Incandescent Bulb 1. List the colors in order. 2. Does the bulb produce a continuous, emission line or absorption line spectrum? 3. Light rays are bent when they pass through the diffraction grating. Judging from what you have just observed, are all the colors are bent by the same amount? 4. What kind/color of light was the source of all these colors? 3. Is white light a simple color or a mixture of a number of colors? 6. Use your imagination to come up with a way that you could try to verify your hypothesis? Part (B) Emission Line Spectra 7. There are many more of these lines in the ultraviolet and infrared regions of the spectrum If these lines are not visible, how do we know they exist? 8. All these spectra are characteristic of the particular elements. That is, they are like fingerprints, each unique to each element. If you found these lines in the spectrum of a star, what would this indicate? Part (C) Fluorescent Bulb 9. Describe which of the three kinds of spectra you observe in the fluorescent bulb. 10. Compare what you see with the previous spectrum tubes that you observed. What clement is present in the fluorescent lamp? 36
