Patient #2 Mitral Valve Prolapse Blood leaking back Loftrum Mitral valve prolapse Miral valve Normal heart Malve prolapse hortion Heart valves play an important role in controlling blood flow through the chambers of the human heart. A malfunction in one or more of these valves can decrease the efficiency of the heart as a pump. The image on the left depicts healthy blood flow the left side of the heart. The image on the right depicts a prolapse (a leak) in the mitral valve of the left side of the heart. A leaky valve is commonly referred to as a “heart murmur” and can be diagnosed by a swishing or clicking sound when listening for the heart sounds through a stethoscope. Suppose you observed clicking sound when listening for a patient's heart sounds. Use Chapter 19 of your textbook and our Heart lecture to answer the following questions: 1) Briefly describe the difference between atrioventricular valves and semilunar valves and how do they control blood flow through the heart? What do the lup and dup sounds heard when listening for a patient's heart sounds represent? 2) How would a insufficiency in the mitral valve, such as the prolapse pictured above, affect blood flow through the heart? 3) Using section 19.3 of your text book research a method of treatment for a prolapsed mitral valve. Is this method a permanent fix for an insufficient heath valve? Briefly explain
