Using the Virial Theorem, derive the condition for gravitational collapse of a spherical uniform cloud of gas with radius R in terms of its mass (the Jeans' mass Mj), expressed in terms of temperature T and mass density p. A diffuse hydrogen cloud has temperature T 50K and mass density p kg m-3. Cal- culate the corresponding Jeans' mass. Discuss briefly what implication its value has for star formation in this region. - 10-18
