To control the power output of an adiabatic steam turbine, with
an isentropic efficiency of 90%, a throttle valve is placed in the
steam line supplying the turbine inlet, as shown in the figure.
Steam at 5 MPa and
400℃ is supplied to the
throttle inlet, and the turbine exhaust pressure is set at 50
kPa. Compare the work produced by
this turbine, in kJ/kg, and
the entropy generation, in kJ/(kg K), when
the throttle valve is completely open (no pressure loss) and when
it is partially closed when pressure at the turbine inlet is
2.5 MPa. Draw the T-s diagram for both
processes.
