Question 2: A new fill pad is to be constructed at your site. Figure below shows the approximate existing soil layer profile along the cross-section. It also shows the proposed location of the fill layer and the slope edge. The imported fill material consists of clayey-sand and has been found to have an undrained strength of 35 kPa and the total unit weight of the fill is 19.0 kN/m3 after placement. The fill edge slope will be 2H:1V. Other soil layers are as follows: a) FM1-FM4 is a normally-consolidated clay with an average undraind strength of 15 kPa, and total unit weight of 18 kN/m3.
