12. A typical electro-optic amplitude modulator is shown above. A linearly polarized beam with wavelength 2 = 633nm is sent a KDP crystal which is oriented such that when a voltage is applied across its faces the index of refraction along y-axis and x-axis makes an angle of 45 degrees with respect to the input polarization. This results in a phase change between the x and y components of the input beam. For KDP, the electro-optic coefficient is given as res = 24.1E-12 m/V. n. = 1.502 and ne = 1.462. = a) What is the half-wave voltage? b) What is the quarter-wave voltage? c) If the crystal is 1cm long, what is the applied external electric field for the case in a)? d) If I place a linear polarizer infront of this crystal and a linear polarizer at the output of the crystal explain how I can make my CW HeNe laser linearly polarized along the y-axis pulsed by making a clear drawing of the orientation of the two polarizers and the EO crystal?
