Mr. and Mrs. Shin are both electrical engineers at the US
Department of Energy, Hanford Washington Site. On Monday Mrs. Shin
read an article in the Yakima Herald about high nitrate levels in
private wells. Mrs. Shin is extremely worried about nitrate
drinking water concentrations because a month ago she and Mr. Shin
moved into a home in South Eastern Washington State that draws its
water from a private well. Additionally, Shin’s have a daughter,
Christina, who is almost three months and has been bottled fed
since the Shin’s moved into their new home, two months ago. After
doing a little research on the internet Mrs. Shin decided to call
her good friend Dr. Martin because she is worried about Christina’s
exposure to nitrate. Dr. Martin explains to Mrs. Shin that she
would love to help, but she is currently swamped preparing for an
upcoming conference presentation. Because Mrs. Shin is such a good
friend Dr. Martin decides to enlist the help of her graduate
students. Before contacting her graduate students, Dr. Martin has
done a little research to assess the Shin family’s exposure to
nitrate and learns the following:
• The Shin’s primary exposure to nitrate comes from their
drinking water.
Average concentration = 0.55 mg/L
Maximum concentration = 5.79 mg/L
• On average the Shin’s drank tap water five days a week for the
past two months. On the weekends, they travel to Seattle to spend
time Mrs. Shin’s parents (where nitrate drinking water
concentrations are much lower).
• The Shin’s all consume different amounts of tap water
Mrs. Shin drinks 72 ozH2O/day
Mr. Shin drinks 60 ozH2O/day
Christina Shin drinks 35 ozH2O/day
• The Shin’s have different body weights Mrs. Shin weighs 115
pounds Mr. Shin weighs 162 pounds Christina weighs 9 pounds
Please: 1. Calculate the Shin’s average daily dose (ADD) from
drinking water using median and maximum nitrate concentrations
