Using Google Earth Pro, the Web version of Google Earth (it works best in Chrome), or as a last resort Google Maps (make sure to turn on the satellite imagery), find an example of the following wave phenomena, take a screenshot (or save the image directly from Google Earth) and label it with the indicated information below. You can add labels within Google Earth or paste your screenshot into a text or graphic editor (Word, Paint, Paintbush etc.) and use that application to annotate your screenshots. Ideally combine all your annotated screenshots into a single PDF and submit that. You may also annotate everything in Google Earth, save as a.kml, and submit your completed assignment as a Google Earth .kml file. These are possibly 4 points each up to a maximum of 10 points. You may want try several in case you make mistakes. Your screen shot and labels must demonstrate that you can recognize and appropriately label the wave phenomenon to get full credit. As such, do not submit the same example of swell and refraction I gave you in the video explanation of the assignment. Find your own examples. 1. SWELL - The picture must show the long, orderly crest lines which are characteristic of

1. SWELL - The picture must show the long, orderly crest lines which are characteristic of swell, not just any waves. Make sure there are at least 3 crests clearly visible in the picture. Label the wavelength and, using the ruler in Google Earth (Tools>Ruler), measure and label the wavelength in meters for at least two pairs of waves. Under the picture, answer this question: Why does the wavelength change? Please do not submit the Point Loma example! used in the video below. Swell is common. You should have no problem finding your own example. 2. WAVE REFRACTION - Look for wave fronts that bend. On the same wave front, label where that wave's celerity is fast and where it is slow. 3. WAVE DIFFRACTION - Clearly label the diffracted wave(s) and indicate their direction of motion with arrows. The object (island, breakwater, jetty etc.) that the waves are diffracting around must be in the screen shot. This one is easy to confuse with refraction because both change wave direction. Wavelength does not change in diffraction because the celerity of diffracted waves does not change. Refraction requires a change in celerity and thus the wavelength of refracted WAVAA Lobana

used in the video below. Swell is common. You should have no problem finding your own example. 2. WAVE REFRACTION - Look for wave fronts that bend. WAVE REFLECTION - Clearly label the reflected wave(s) and indicate their direction of travel with an arrow. This one is very difficult to find. You need to find a place where waves hit a rock, cliff, seawall, breakwater or seawall before they break. This situation will maximize the wave energy available for reflection. You can tell if waves are reflecting by looking for wave patterns showing a series of arcs that expand away from the shore. 5. WAVE INTERFERENCE - Try to find somewhere that waves reach a shore from two different directions. Show the two directions with arrows. Also label at least one place where the interference is constructive and one place where it is destructive. - Here is a short tutorial on how to use Google Earth
