A clinical microbiologist receives a sputum (spit) sample from a sick patient. The physician suspects a Staphylococcus infection, but wants to know if it's an methicillin-resistant strain. The microbiologist takes the sputum sample, spreads it on a slide, and probes the cells for a specific methicillin-resistance gene. Some of the cells glow, indicating a positive result. The patient has methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Based on this scenario, select all (4 answers) that are true. The microbiologist could also use PCR to detect the methicillin- resistance gene. The microbiologist could also use phage typing to detect the methicillin-resistance gene. If the microbiologist did a Gram stain, she would see chains of pink spheres. The microbiologist could culture the cells in a growth medium with methicillin added, to see if they grow. This would be an example of a differential medium

This would be an example of a selective medium. The microbiologist performed an ELISA test. The microbiologist performed a FISH test. If the microbiologist did a Gram stain, she would see clusters of purple spheres.
