02 2. What would be the result of the competition between the two species? Will the invasive species be expected to colonize the continent? Justify your response. ognisem 3. Below, create a figure representing the state-space plot of the exploitative interaction between one mosquito species and human hosts. In this scenario, imagine that there is a continued supply of hosts as needed. Draw in the appropriate lines for zero growth and arrow indicating growth and decline of both species within each quadrant.

and exp The Asian Tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is an invasive species competing with the native North American treehole mosquito Aedes triseriatus. Scientists have been attempting to determine its potential for colonizing the continent by examining its competitive interactions. The tiger mosquito has shown aptitude for artificial aquatic habitats for its larval development, such as pooling water in discarded car tires. The treehole mosquito inhabits similar artificial habitats, but is also found in treeholes as a habitat for larval development, as the common name suggests. Below are figures modified from a publication, demonstrating the state-space plots of the two competing species in two different habitat resources. 300 80 250 200 150 Number of A. triseriatus per 100ml Number of A. triseriatus per 100ml 50 0 40 50 20 120 0 10 20 40 60 80 100 Number of A. albopictus per 100ml 30 Number of A. albopictus per 100ml Figure 1. Zero isoclines of two mosquito species A. albopictus (dashed line) and A. triseriatus (solid line) in treeholes (left) and simulated tire habitats (right). 1. Using the figures above: a. determine the carrying capacity of each species in different habitats, and b. calculate the competition coefficients of each species in the two habitats.
