Previous experiment introduced the technique of
liquid/liquid extraction using water as the aqueous phase and ethyl
acetate as the organic phase. Now we apply the technique to a more
specific type of reaction. In this experiment, a mixture of a
neutral unknown compound and an unknown compound containing a
carboxylic acid group (acidic) will be separated by extraction.
Instead of using water as the aqueous phase, sodium hydroxide
(base) will be used as the aqueous phase. Carboxylic acids react
with sodium hydroxide to form a water-soluble salt. The resulting
water-soluble salt will be separated from the organic layer which
will still contain the neutral compound. To recover the carboxylic
acid, the basic solution containing the water -soluble salt will be
acidified with acid.
Briefly explain why the dissolved mixture was extracted with
sodium hydroxide to start the separation
b) Briefly explain what was chemically happening in the aqueous
layer upon addition of acid.
Explain why the neutral compound was recovered from the organic
layer and not the aqueous layer.
Why was it necessary to wash the organic layer with water?
Why was it necessary to wash the organic layer with saturated
sodium chloride?
