QUESTION 9 [20 total marks] The gas phase decomposition of substance A at 310 K proceeds by way of the following two parallel reactions: A B C A D + E RT kı = (1.2 x 108-1) x exp (-5.62x10* Jmol k2 = (1.2 x 1085-1) x exp(-5.10x10* Jmol-1 RT Both reactions are first order. The initial concentration of A, [A]o, is 1.0 mol dm3. The aim is to produce D. (a) Derive a function for the variations in the concentration of D, [D], with time and calculate [D] at t = 200 s. (8 marks) (b) What is the percentage yield of D, defined as [D]/[A]o, obtained at this temperature? (6 marks) (c) Explain if the reaction temperature should be increased or decreased to improve the percentage yield of D, and how that would affect the rate of reaction (for A). (6 marks)
