1. Understand how nitration of benzene works. Know the mechanism for this reaction (we went over it in lab and in lecture) and understand potential side products. Understand all questions in the lab report for this experiment. 2. Be able to calculate theoretical yields for a given set of reaction conditions. 3. Understand the process for identifying an unknown organic compound, and be able to analyze and interpret a given data set to identify a functional group. 4. Understand the chemistry behind the different functional group tests. We will only cover the tests from the "Organic Knowns Handout" on Blackboard. 5. Be able to narrow down potential identities for an unknown based on a given data set, and understand how to what derivative to make in order to best identify an unknown. 6. Understand the Diels Alder reaction mechanism and predict potential products. Understand the concepts covered in the assigned post-lab questions. 7. Be able to interpret IR and proton NMR data. Understand basic terms (shielding, splitting, integration) and be able to determine a structure from a HNMR spectrum, or vice versa. You should know general chemical shifts (ie- where do aromatic protons show up? What about alkanes, alcohols, esters, etc). Be sure to understand how peak splitting happens, and apply the N+1 rule to predict splitting patterns. You will be given a list of common IR absorbances as well as a list of HNMR chemical shifts.
