Compound Time to brominate (seconds) Brown colour disappears phenol 12 4-chlorophenol 91 4-nitrophenol >600 Compound Time to brominate (seconds) Brown colour disappears aniline 100 acetanilide >600
in cupouuiu 1. Phenol, 4-chlorophenol, 4-nitrophenol, aniline and acetanilide are placed in labelled test tubes 2. Bromine in ethanoic acid is place in a sixth test tube 3. The six test tubes are placed in a beaker of warm water (30°C) for about 10 minutes 4. Bromine solution is added to each of the three test tubes containing phenols, the test tubes are swirled, and a timer is started 5. The time taken for the brown colour to disappear is noted 6. This procedure is repeated for aniline and acetanilide 7. Reaction times within the two different groups of compounds are compared
