1. Attach a written explanation (one page maximum) about how you determined your structure;
explaining what information the degrees of unsaturation, the IR spectra, and both NMR spectra gave
you. Talk about splitting pattern (# neighboring H’s), integrations (simplest ratio of H’s),
shielding/deshielding effects, chemical shifts, etc.
2. IR – circle and label each type of bond present directly on the spectra. Label the type of bond each
peak represents (For example, instead of just saying alkane, you could say C-H alkane, or Csp3-H).

13C-NMR and 1H-NMR – Draw out the skeletal structure of the compound, label the H’s a, b, c’s and
the C’s 1, 2, 3’s. Then label all signals on the NMR with those corresponding letters/numbers.).
4. Please show your calculations for degrees of unsaturation and integration ratios on one of the
previous handout pages in the margins.
*On each handout page please draw out the skeletal structure of your unknown.
