Carbon dioxide is one of the factors driving global warming. It also leads to the acidification of marine water. Acidification is measured as pH (the lower the pH, the more acidic the water is). One possible path for carbon dioxide to enter marine water is through algal blooms. Agricultural run-off water is high in nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous, two elements that are important for plant growth. This run-off leads to algal blooms in coastal waters. When the algal blooms die, they decompose and release carbon dioxide into the water. To determine whether algal blooms are associated with acidification, a research team randomly sampled 24 sites in coastal waters with algal bloom and 24 control sites (no algal blooms). Among other variables, pH was measured at every site. Using the data in the ‘Q2_Water’ sheet and alpha = 0.05, determine whether the pH is lower in algal bloom sites.
