Suppose you have an electroscope made of 2 long sheets of really thin gold leaf. People use gold because you can make very thin sheets out of it and it is an excellent conductor. The sheets are attached to a support at the top and hang down right next to each other. To use the electroscope, you put some static charge on the sheets and they repel each other. The diagram below shows an early electroscope which you would charge by induction on the big plate on top. Let's say each sheet has a mass of 0.01 gram and is 5cm long.
