Physics students are learning to use phasor diagrams to
analyze RLC series circuits. They are given the
following phasor diagram, and they are told that the AC power
source has a frequency of 60.0 Hz and the resistor has a
resistance of 60.0 Ω.
Four vectors and a directional arrow are positioned on a
coordinate plane. All vectors begin at the origin. In
counterclockwise order, starting from the bottom: a vector
labeled ΔVC = 15.0
V points down along the vertical axis; a second vector
labeled ΔVR = 20.0
V points to the right along the horizontal axis; a third
vector labeled ΔVmax points up and to
the right forming an angle of 𝜑 with the horizontal axis;
and a fourth vector
labeled ΔVL = 25.0
V points up along the vertical axis. A dashed line indicates
that the horizontal component
of ΔVmax equals the value
of ΔVR. A curved arrow pointing
counterclockwise is labeled 𝜔.
The students are then asked to determine the following.
(a)
the maximum voltage ΔVmax (in V)
across the series RLC combination
V
(b)
the phase angle 𝜑 (in degrees)
°
(c)
the maximum current (in A) in the circuit
A
(d)
the total impedance (in Ω) of the circuit

(e)
the capacitance (in µF)
µF
(f)
the inductance (in H)
H
(g)
the average power (in W) delivered to the circuit
W
