1. Answer ALL parts of this question. (a) A wind turbine has the features shown in FIGURE Q1a. P2 Thrust, Rotor diameter = 8 m Un = 12 ms- U2U U, = 4 ms"! FIGURE Q1a Density of air is 1.225 kg mº. Using information from FIGURE Q1a and the relevant formulae in the APPENDIX, calculate: (1) The air velocity at the rotor, U2 (1 mark) (ii) The axial induction factor (a) for this turbine (1 mark) (iii) The pressure at either side of the rotor (points 2 and 3) (3 marks) (iv) The power output from the turbine. (2 marks)
