Ammonia is a common refrigerant used in air conditioners. Consider the thermodynamic cycle described below which is used to cool air in a typical room in a coastal town.
- 2.74 mol/s of air, initially at 36.0°C is passed through the shell side of a heat exchanger, with 5.00 kg/hr of ammonia flowing through the tubes. There is no mixing of the streams.
- The ammonia leaves the heat exchanger as a saturated vapour before entering a compressor, where the pressure is raised to 5.00 bar, producing a superheated vapour.
- The superheated vapour enters a poorly designed isobaric cooler that drops the temperature to 0.0°C.
- The resulting liquid stream is throttled through a valve, with a pressure gauge on the outlet reading 1.00 bar. The resulting two-phase mixture is fed to the heat exchanger to complete the cycle.
Answer the following questions:
a. Draw a fully labelled sketch of the process as described, making sure to assign stream numbers that you must refer to in all calculations.
b. What is the quality of the ammonia stream leaving the valve? (Hint: heat of vaporization is a function of temperature)
c. What is the minimum temperature that the air could be cooled to in the heat exchanger? If you
